Principal Streamlines WEEE Regulations Compliance Processes

WEEE Regulations and GreenITBoxThese days it is incumbent on every business to behave responsibly with regard to the disposal of unwanted office electronic equipment. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive which came into force in January 2007 sets these responsibilities into legislation, and so it has become a crucial part of the health and safety agenda for business, as well as impacting the bottom line.

WEEE Compliance Made Easy

Aware from feedback from its customers, that companies continue to be stretched in ensuring compliance, Principal Corporation has teamed up with GreenIT Box to promote easy and streamlined business processes to ensure compliance to WEEE, and to take the headaches out of the detail.

GreenIT Box is quite simply a box, on a shrink-wrapped pallet, delivered to your required location(s). It is placed in the IT department, branch offices and any other suitable location, for employees to fill with their old IT equipment. The all-inclusive service is billed with no hidden extras – one single price to include delivery, collection and recycling charges, plus a certificate of destruction - thus offering a fully compliant and certified recycling service managed via trusted-partners dedicated IT disposal centres.

As well as ensuring all legal responsibilities regarding the disposal of WEEE, company compliance managers working with GreenIT Box can also know that they are covered in respect of all requirements of The Environment Act's 'Duty of Care' regulations.

The Recycling Processes

GreenIT Box apply the following processes to all materials collected:

Depollution: Prior to processing the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), hazardous materials/components are removed from the equipment and separately treated in accordance with Annex II of the WEEE Directive and in line with best practice guidance provided via BATRRT.

Shredding: A powerful four shaft rotary shredder, large enough to process almost any form of whole IT equipment, reduces assembled structures down to 40mm or 25mm fragments, and in the process, liberates metals, metal bearing materials and plastics. This high-capacity system is capable of processing up to 80 Tonnes of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) per day.

Separation: After shredding, the mixed fragments move through an automated separation process, passing through powerful overband and drum magnets which extract and collect ferrous metal fragments. The residual fragments then pass through an eddy current separator, splitting the plastic and non-ferrous materials into two further, well-defined streams.

Reprocessing: The resulting separated recyclate streams from the process are then passed directly to specialised reprocessors who will reconstitute the recyclate into re-usable raw material commodities in a closed loop recovery, a zero landfill process!
