About Deskjet by Hewlett Packard - The Name & Background
Hewlett Packard created the brand name Deskjet to describe its inkjet printer range. (as opposed to laser print technologies, for example). The generic name applies to printers in a range of sizes from domestic computer printers for home use to large systems used in industry or print shops – although lately the name DesignJet has applied to some larger scale systems.
1988 saw the production and sale of the first Deskjet – a black-only model which sold in the US for $1,000 a unit. At the time, users requiring a small dedicated printer had the choice of slower, impact-based printers or the still relatively pricey laser printer, and so a non-impact design with near-laser quality was revolutionary. It was not long – in 1991 – that Hewlett Packard produced a colour Deskjet, and so the smaller scale affordable colour printing revolution had truly begun.
The key to today’s affordability was simply the increased demand from consumers which enabled production on a grand scale. Additionally, technical innovation ensured reliability and lower running costs.
Adding to their versatility, Deskjets soon came equipped with 3 colour and black cartridges as a de facto standard. A prime feature of Deskjet technology is the disposable print head which forms part of the cartridge, and not part of the base unit. As well as the reliability thus resulting, ink consumption is reduced by the avoidance of regular head-cleaning requirements.
The Deskjet Today
Today, Hewlett Packard Deskjet technology is deployed in its current Deskjet, DesignJet, PhotoSmart and Professional Series printer products. These are all based on thermal inkjet technology, but with individual differences in the latest PhotoSmart range where a wider set of inks is used.
